Our Team
The Makati Medical Center Institutional Review Board (MMC IRB) is composed of a multidisciplinary group. It consists of physicians, a nurse, a pharmacist, a psychotherapist and a statistical consultant who collectively have the qualifications and experience to review and evaluate the science, technical and ethical aspects of the proposed clinical investigation. Assisted with the administrative staff, the MMC IRB is driven to protect the rights and welfare of human subjects.
SONIA E. BONGALA, MD

An active consultant and currently the Vice-Chair of IRB, Dr. Sonia Bongala finished her Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Makati Medical Center. A Thomasian by heart, she became Chairman of the Department of Medical Education, Faculty of Medicine & Surgery (2007-2008) and Coordinator of Student Welfare & Development Board under the same faculty (1998-2008) at the University of Sto. Tomas. She was previously the Residency Training Officer (1997-2006) and Vice Chair for Quality Assurance (2008-2011), Department of OB-GYN, at the Makati Medical Center. Dr. Bongala has been a member of IRB since September 2012 and appointed as the IRB Officer in Charge until July 2013 before she became Vice-Chair in same year.
DENNIS G. DAMASO, MD

Dr. Dennis Damaso is currently the Director for the Medical Education and Research Division at the Makati Medical Center. A member of the IRB since 1993, he is one of the pioneering members of the MMC-IRB. A former president of the Makati Medical Center Alumni Association, Dr. Damaso practices general surgery since 1981.

Dr. Delfin Darwin Dasig is one of the newest members of the MMC-IRB, having been appointed in July 2014. At Makati Medical Center, he is currently the Chief for the Section of Neurology and a consultant of the Memory Plus Center. His research interests are on aging and dementia, chronobiology and nerve and muscle disorders.
HAZEL FAYE R. DOCUYANAN, RPH, MS

Currently the Assistant Vice President of Department of Pharmacy Services at the Makati Medical Center, Ms. Hazel Faye Docuyanan obtained her degree of Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy at the University of the Philippines – Manila where she also earned her Masteral in Hospital Pharmacy. A mother of three, Ms. Docuyanan has been serving Makati Medical Center since 1992 and has attended numerous seminars and trainings here and abroad. She is the appointed Member-Secretary of the IRB and has been an IRB member since January 2007.
MA. TARCELA S. GLER, MD

Dr. Ma. Tarcela Gler is an appointed IRB member since June 2013. Currently, she is an Infectious Diseases Specialist and Chairperson of the HIV/AIDS Core Team (HACT) at the Makati Medical Center. She had received trainings in Access-based Data Management (Bangkok, Thailand), Operational Research (US Centers for Disease Control) and Certificate Course in Epidemiology (Iowa, USA).
SATURNINO P. JAVIER, MD

Dr. Saturnino Javier, Past President of the Philippine Heart Association, is the current IRB Chair. He has been in the position since year 2006. He specializes in Internal Medicine/ Adult Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology (Angiography and Angioplasty) and Intravascular Ultrasonography. At Makati Medical Center, he is the Department Head of the Fellowship Training Program. In December 2014, he was elected the first Chair of the Philippine Health Research Ethics Network Inc.
MS. JOCELYN N. LAVERINTO
Ms. Jocelyn Laverinto has been the lay, non-institutional member of the IRB since April 2006. Although she passed the Philippine Certified Public Accountancy Board Exam in 1986, she took her PhD Psychology with specialization in Clinical at the De La Salle University, Manila. She is currently a psychotherapist specializing in the treatment of abuse survivors, trauma and dissociation. She also has expertise in individual, couple and group therapies.
FILOMENA L. MONTINOLA, MD
Dr. Filomena Montinola has been with the IRB before 2006. She is an active medical staff of the Department of Dermatology at the Makati Medical Center. She specializes in Clinical Dermatology, Dermapathology and Cutaneous Laser Surgery.
MS. IMELDA L. SANTIAGO
Ms. Imelda Santiago, one of our Lay, non-institutional member since June 2012, is a graduate of AB Mathematics – cum laude – at Assumption College and earned her Master of Science in Statistics at the Ateneo de Manila University. She attended a number of seminars /special courses on Statistics and Planning which includes one in Tokyo, Japan (Oct-Nov 1980) and Basic Needs Strategy as a Planning Parameter at West Berlin, Germany (Jun 1979).
MICHAEL C. WASSMER, MD

Dr. Michael Wassmer is member of the IRB since November 2009. At Makati Medical Center, he is the Head of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. He is also a research committee member of the Department of Pediatrics.
